Hey Guys What’s up? This time I’m back with some interesting stuff related to Internet Information Services (IIS) for you guys (although I could have been here sooner…!!) being frank … I have recently been too much into the so-called digital world and now I have started getting bored of it …. But yeah… again, the digital world is a big place as we know… and people often intend to get lost within big places like a small kid lost in the Disneyland….

But yeah again… I won’t be responsible if you do get lost in so called digital world… as I’m a blogger and a scriptwriter known to make sure to lure people into my fantasies, creative thinking and also various other stuff …maybe I will make a part 2 on this blog as well…. (IN THOUGHTS — who am I kidding… I will eventually get lazy and mess it up again…!!)

Yeah… that’s right… now without taking more of your time which I have already taken………

Introduction

This article explains how to install Internet Information Services (IIS) 8.5 on Windows Server 2012 R2. IIS is the role of a Web server in Windows Server 2012 R2. The Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system has all the IIS features needed to support Web content management in production environments. Windows 8 includes IIS features, but feature availability depends on the app version.

Note: You can use the processes in this document to install IIS 8.0 or IIS 8.5.

The Web server has modular design which lets us customize the server by including or excluding modules to meet our specific requirements. The installation of IIS 8.5 in the Windows Server 2012 R2 section explains how to install the modules, and the Modules in the IIS 8.5 section below describe the functionality provided by each module and which modules are installed automatically.

New to IIS 8.5

IIS 8.5 has many new features that are not there in IIS 8.0 version or less:

· Enhanced login. Administrator can enable login for additional custom fields from the request or response subject, or from server variables.

· Signing in to follow a Windows event. The administrator can enable the transmission of login information for Windows Event Tracing (ETW).

· Making Dynamic Website Work. If there are a large number of sites set up (100 or more, by default), the app will not work on any of the sites when the service is started.

· Inactive Worksheet Page. An administrator may enable an idle activity process to be suspended rather than terminated.

Before You Get Started

Make sure you have the user rights to the computer on which you plan to install IIS 8.5. Note that by default, you do not have administrative user rights if you are logged in as a user without a built-in controller, even if you have been added to the local administrator group on a computer.

Sign in to the built-in administrator account, or explicitly request applications as a built-in administrator using the runas command line tool.

Note: You can runas/ user: administrator cmd.exe so that all the processes that you run on that command line will be highlighted, eliminating the need to use runas syntax from the command line.

If you are logged in to an account other than the local built-in administrator account, you can see the following dialog box for security notifications.

IIS is one of the server roles in Windows Server 2012 R2, called Web Server (IIS). You can use the following to install IIS:

· Virtual server user interface for Windows Server 2012 R2

· Command line insertion using DISM (Image Export and Performance)

· Command line installation using PowerShell cmdlets.

Note: IIS can also be installed on Windows 8 by using or opening the dialog box feature in the Settings and Control Panel settings.

Install IIS 8.5 using Server Manager

Server Manager provides a single dashboard to add/uninstall server roles, task services, and features. Server Manager also provides an overview of all currently included roles and features.

When you install IIS 8.5 using Windows Server 2012 R2 Server Manager, the steps you take are different when you install IIS for the first time, as opposed to adding features, services, or roles to an IIS installation that is already present. Two procedures are given below. Various processes are used to add and remove roles, role services, and features. You do not add and remove from the same UI.

Install IIS 8.5 for the first time in the Server Manager

When the role of Web Server (UI) is first selected in the Add Roles and Features Wizard to Server Manager, the basic features and services required for IIS are automatically selected. The following process will install Internet Information Services on the virtual server when IIS is not yet installed. To change an existing IIS installation, perform the following procedure, Install additional IIS services. These two processes involve different steps.

1. Open Server Manager by clicking on the Server Manager icon on the desktop.

2. In the Server Manager window, select Dashboard and Quick Start, click Enter Roles and Features, or click Manage Menu, and then click Add Roles and Features. The Add Roles and Features Wizard will start with the page before you start. The assistant asks for confirmation of the following:

· Administrator account has a strong password.

· Network settings, such as IP addresses, are set.

· Current security updates from Windows® Update are installed.

3. On the Start Before page, click Next.

4. On the Input Type page, select Role-based or feature-based installation to configure a single server. Click Next.

5. On the Server Options page, select Select server from the server pool, and then select a server; or select Select a virtual hard disk server, select a server to install VHD on it, and select a VHD file. Click Next.

Fig 4.0: IIS Management Tools

Note: To connect to a visible hard disk, the visible machine must be turned off and disconnected. If you select a VHD file in a network share, that assignment must grant read and write permissions to a computer (home application) of the server account you selected to install VHD (access to the user account alone is not sufficient).

Be careful Server pool servers will only be available if they are added by adding other servers to manage the command in the Server Manager.

1. On the Server Roads page, select Web Server (IIS).

2. In the Add Roles and Features Wizard, click Apply Features if you want to install the IIS Management Console. If you do not want to install the Management Console, uncheck Install management tools (if applicable), and then click Continue.

3. On the Server Roads page, click Next

Note: The features required for the default role of the management tools and the IIS Management Console will be selected in advance on the features page.

4. On the Features page, select any features you would like to add, and then click Next. Note that you do not need to select any features on this page to install IIS. The IIS setup will select the required features.

5. On the Web Server Role (IIS) page, then click Next.

6. On the Role Services page, choose any additional services you want to install.

Note: If you install IIS for the first time by selecting Web Server (IIS), you will get at least one automatic installation that includes a low set of service services. You can see from this point that those default services are pre-selected on the server roles page. For a list of available server roles, and which roles are automatically installed, see Modules in IIS 8.5. You will have the opportunity to select many services later in the process.

You may also not choose automatically selected role services when selecting Web Server. However, at least one Web Server application must be selected for selection and installation.

7. If you have chosen a role service that needs other services or features to be installed, a page will be displayed that shows which services or features should be installed. Let go of the Install management tools that are selected to install installation tools related with the server role. You may not need administrative tools on your destination server if you plan to manage roles remotely. Click Add Features to add the required roles for services or features.

8. After adding the services you need on the role services page, click Next.

9. On the verification page, confirm the selected services and features. Select Restart the destination host if you need to restart the server to go where the settings need to work immediately. To save configuration information in an XML-based file that you can use to install unencrypted with Windows PowerShell, select Send configuration settings, scroll to the Save As dialog box, enter a file name, and click on Save. When you are ready to start the installation process on the Verification page, click Install.

10. The Installation Progress Page is displayed. You can close the wizard without interrupting active functions. You can view the progress or open the page again by clicking Notifications in the notification area, and then clicking Activity Details.

11. On the results page, confirm that the installation is successful, then click Close.

12. Make sure the Web server works by opening the Web browser, and make sure the default Web page is displayed when using the http: // localhost address.
